Plant Food Structures

The leaf-like apertures in "Leaf Dome, DOS, 2009" are the initial inspiration for a new series of dome structures 
conceptualized as printed plant food, which become replaced by the plants it feeds. 

I'm teaching a class at MoMA - 11/5, 11/12, 11/19, 11/26, 12/3

In this class students focus on designing and fabricating their own small tables and chairs from common pine, using a hand saw, hammer, and nails, becoming part of theAutoprogettazione (roughly translated as “self design”) project initiated by the Italian product designer Enzo Mari in 1974. Mari reduced a furniture series to its immediate technological possibilities in an attempt to turn consumer into maker. This class is geared toward persons interested in familiarizing themselves with techniques in wooden furniture construction that can be issued with the aid of only a few hand tools and materials. Other topics to be covered include the basics of tree anatomy, lumber procurement (harvesting, drying, and buying), wood types and usages, basic wood joinery, and applying oil finishes. 

RESIDENTIAL WIND TOWERS - w i p

The simple idea behind this residential tower was to create a structure that could populate wind turbines adjacent to each other while allowing maximum flow of wind. 

Small bowl for Casco Viejo - typical section

Designed for a Panamanian non-profit aiming to improve the culture of skateboarding within the country by providing public skateparks. The structure was designed by DOS to be built on top of a preexisting slab located on a small beach in Casco Viejeo.

THIS GESTALT ARTIFICE MATHEMATICALLY ARRANGES A LARGE MATRIX OF RADII, ELLIPSES, AND CHORDS FOR USE IN SKATEPARK DESIGN. THE IDEA WAS TO CREATE A SET OF SYMPATHETIC GEOMETRIES TO ACT AS A  GUIDE TO THE POSSIBLE DESIGN OF TRAINING FACILITIES AND COMPETITION AREAS ASSOCIATED WITH THE OLYMPICS, AS WELL AS A TOOL WHICH COULD EASE THE DIALOG BETWEEN AN ARCHITECT OR CONTRACTOR AND A SKATEBOARDING PUBLIC. APPROXIMATE VELOCITY VALUES ARE ASSOCIATED WITH EACH PLANE.

Delineated here is curve 5, we see it scaled upward in one dimension between 5,1a and 5,1g and outward in two dimensions between 5,3a and 5,3g & inward in two dimensions between 5,3z and 5,3w & downward in one dimension between 5,1z and 5,1w, with the same percent difference between each curve. Then we have the chords of ellipses to use as embankments 5Ba-5Bg and 5Bw and 5Bg.
